The Jomres License

This article is a quick clarification how Jomres itself is licensed.

Previous to December 2009 Jomres was licensed under a proprietary license restricting the number of servers you could install Jomres on. As of the first of December 2009 all versions, both previous to that date and until further notice the PHP files in Jomres (unless otherwise licensed by their respective copyright owners) are now dual licensed under the GNU/GPL V2 and MIT license, choose whichever suits your circumstance best. Note, however all images, CSS and javascript which are copyright Vince Wooll/Woollyinwales IT are not GPL/MIT licensed and are not freely distributable, they are licensed under the Jomres Proprietary Use License.

This means that you can distribute any of the Jomres PHP files to any third party, in any way that you see fit, however the CSS, Javascript and images in the system are not licensed under the GPL and you may not distribute them freely.

Let's quickly look at a couple of different scenarios :

  • You are a designer, with a number of different clients, and you want to install Jomres on those client's servers. This is fine, and we do not consider this "distribution".
  • You want to give Jomres away/sell it via your own website. We consider this distribution, and you would need to replace the Jomres CSS, Javascript and images typically contained in Jomres with your own, copywritable code to make this a legal distribution.

Jomres Proprietary Use License

The Jomres Proprietary Use License is a GPL compatible license that pertains only to the images, CSS and JavaScript elements of Jomres and it's plugins.

As stated by the GPL version 2.0 license, those elements of the product that are not compiled together but are sent independently of GPL code, and combined in a client's browser, do not have to be GPL themselves. Images, CSS and JavaScript elements that are copyright Woollyinwales IT, can be used and manipulated for your own or your client's purposes, however you cannot redistribute these files as your own, or include them in a package or extension of your own without prior consent of Woollyinwales IT.

Developers

If you're considering writing a Jomres plugin, be aware that we do not consider software that uses Jomres functions or classes to be derivative of Jomres. This means that you can license your plugins in any way that you wish.
